Description

After the repulsion of the Kraegarym invasion by the Namaran Darchi, the Lord Martial reversed her father’s xenophobic stance of isolationism and opened up trade relations with the many races around them. The Dunbaren Trade Federation and several nations within the Terran Alliance established trade treaties with the Darchi, but saw little in the way of high-value assets among the more primitive alien species. The Teek, however, did- discovering a small amphibious frog-like creature native to the Namaran homeworld that was of such exquisite taste to the diminutive saurian race that many Terrans refer to them as “fribbit crack”.
Preferring their food alive or very, very recently killed, Teek are one of the foremost consumers of non-synthesized food outside of the Ahruga (and they outrank the Teek only because of their tremendous food intake, twenty pounds of meat and vegetables a day on average) which made them the Namaran’s number one trading partner. Exchanging their advanced technology and the knowledge of how to use it and develop their own based on it, the Teek gave the Namaran a two-century-leap in technological innovation. After being approached by the Teek, the Free Systems Alliance also chipped in with some of their own armour and engine designs in exchange for mining rights in several uninhabitable systems within Namaran-claimed space.
The product of this sudden influx of engineering advances was a new generation of technology- medical treatments that have tripled the Namaran lifespan, advances in artificial gravity that have revolutionized their ship and colony design, new gravitic engines to replace their archaic ion and fusion drives, current-tech jump engines to replace the primitive ones reverse-engineered from captured Khurian vessels from the first invasion, and weapons technology in line with Terran Alliance standards. The Rae’Naal was intended to be a small-scale testbed for the integration of this advanced technology, and the results have proven to be astounding.
Unlike previous vessels developed from reverse-engineering Khurian vessels, the Rae’Naal is entirely Namaran in design. Though using technology developed by other races, the Namaran engineers have taken it in their own direction and made it wholly theirs. Thus, while the Rae’Naal is an advanced fighter comparable to any Terran or Naradi fighter, it is Namaran in spirit and design.
The most notable features of this are the iconic Namaran EM-plate-fed hydrogen ramscoops; the plates in front of the engine nacelles that act as attractors to free-floating hydrogen atoms, and then feed them back into the ramscoops proper. This is, ironically, a more secure form of ramscoop than most designs, with very little of the actual intake exposed to be hit by precision shots. Due to the increased power demand of the weapon systems and engines, however, the Rae’Naal uses conventional ramscoops in the leading edge of the wing as well. Two other distinctly Namaran designs- the long, pointed tail typical of their vessels (and modeled on a flying lizard native to their world), and the deity “hood-ornament” icons on the nacelles that represent various tribal deities of war and protection.
The Namaran were less than impressed with particle projection technology, seeing it as a brute-force weapon that lacks any elegance or refinement (ironic considering that- prior to this- the most advanced energy weapons they possessed were crude plasma projectors). AP lancers, on the other hand, were to them what a finely-tuned precision-made instrument was to a master musician. Every weapon on the Rae’Naal is some form of AP lancer, though they are somewhat less efficient than Terran anti-proton weaponry due to the science of creating antimatter charged particle being well beyond native Namaran engineering capabilities. Still, though incapable of sustained beams, the Namaran AP lancers are quite potent in single shots and burst fire pulses.
The Rae’Naal mounts four powerful AP lancers fixed-forward in spinals, two under the cockpit and one in each engine nacelle. Five lighter AP lancer ball turrets- two on each nacelle, one dorsal and one ventral, and on under the tail in the rear- act as directional firepower and anti-missile defense. Despite the lack of missiles, the Rae’Naal is still quite deadly in the hands of a Namaran pilot. The hyper-agile near-human race can jockey these fighters into position to fire all four spinals simultaneously nine times in ten, with devastating results comparable to a standard LRM strike.
Though Namaran aerospace combat tactics are of the don’t-get-hit school of thought, they nevertheless integrated Freeman-developed carbon-turine battleplate into the armour of the vessel. Terran-manufactured shields are the only non-Namaran-built components, largely because the Namaran deemed it cheaper to buy shield generators from Terran firms rather than engineer their own. The end result is a hard-hitting, tough little fighter that- in the hands of a Namaran or Kyaren- can outfly most Human ships.
