One of the few truly effective vessels produced by the Khurian navy is the Vlarash fighter. Even staunch enemies of the Khurians give these fast, agile fighters grudging respect. Designed around a simply bisected delta aerodyne frame, it is a simple, effective fighter design, indicating that either the Khurians can produce decent engineers from time to time, or stole the design from someone.
The Vlarash mounts two PPCs forward in fixed mounts with only 20° arcs of fire. It carries twenty Huurida missiles- comparable to an LRM, but with shorter range and less intelligent- in internal magazines, ten to a side. The lack of aft or directional weaponry is probably the single biggest drawback of the Vlarash, requiring the pilot to bring the nose in alignment with his target for pulse cannon fire, or relying on missiles. In this regard, the Vlarash is much like Terran atmospheric fighters of the 20th through 22nd centuries.
Two single-core gravitic engines give the Vlarash maneuverability on par with many Terran light fighters, which becomes a necessity considering how thin-skinned the fighter is. While it appears on the surface to be a heavily-armoured fighter, the thick hide is deceptive. The Khurians have not yet developed nanotechnology advanced enough to create atomically-bonded materials. As a result, they still use molecularly-bonded carbon composite and turine armour plating. This antiquated armour compares to Terran atomically-bonded plating at a ratio of one meter of MB armour being equal to ten centimeters of AB armour. Thus, the thick hide of the Vlarash is a paper mask, easily punched through by most Terran weapons in one or two hits.
Unlike the next-generation warships produced by the Empire using stolen Skree shielding technology, the Vlarash fighters are fitted with Terran-built shield generators. An enterprising Khurian noble negotiated a deal to purchase these generators through proxy Freespace corporations, thereby bypassing the many embargos the Terran Alliance of Nations has against the Khurian Empire. This gives the Vlarash survivability in battle, provided no one uses disruptor weapons.
Shown are a squadron of Vlarash fighters who were part of a raider group that made the mistake of attempting to capture a Free Systems Alliance exploration vessel… that happened to be carrying a squadron of SF-101 Vindicators. The exploration vessel- the FSES Misbehavin’- also happened to be armed with several SSMs which destroyed the corvettes and frigate that made up the raider group. Some days, it just doesn’t pay to be the bad guys.
