HPA-39 Patton Battlesuit by Jepray HPA-39 Patton Battlesuit by Jepray
The NAU's principal battlesuit- an advanced form of flight-capable heavy powered armour- the Patton is one of the most widely sold battlesuits in existence. The North American Union sells these suits to nearly a dozen other nations- though they refuse to sell them to Freespace systems or private sector mercenary firms- as well as fielding them in their own arsenals.
Unlike most battlesuits, the Patton does not have any missile launchers built into it. While it can carry man-portable missile launchers, and attach a scissor-rack of SRMs onto its back between the gravitic thrusters via maglock, the only onboard weapon systems are directed energy. The chest-mounted AP lancer and forearm-mounted PPCs give the Patton decidedly potent punch, but its primary armament is hand-held heavy weapons of a variety of types according to mission. Most common is the PPC-40, the NAU's primary crew-served heavy weapon, however SpecOps units utilizing Patton battlesuits will often use their own personal choice of heavy weapons.
Like all battlesuits, the gravitic thrusters of the Patton allow it virtually unrestricted flight. It is capable of transiting from surface-to-orbit, however at a top speed of mach 1.3 it is simply quicker to use shuttles and dropships. In urban warfare, the Patton will skim along the ground at low altitudes- usually just a few meters- and use its high speed and maneuverability to avoid being hit. In boarding operations, Pattons are often used to secure airlocks or sabotage weapon systems and shield generators, and possess suit-wide magnetic grapling capability to adhere to a target's hull.

it's mid-flight, and the operator's arms are inside the torso

Oh that's very lovely..But with ultra-dense armors, what is the purpose of the combat knife?

Vibro knife... it can cut a hole in a wall like a hot knife through butter, treats Steel bulk heads the same way and can be used as a can opener on other peoples armor, walking or tracked.

That..doesn't..seem consistent with the explanation of why ballistic/projectile weapons were useless against the armor. I guess it must be a badass little motor in there.

projectile weapons use blunt force, useless against something as dense as 24th century body armour. Vibroblades, on the other hand, use energetic forces in a flat, two-dimensional plane of harmonic vibrations. Vibroblades use an adaptive frequency harmonic vibration field suspended nanometers in front of a diamond-sharp cutting edge. This harmonic vibration field can disrupt molecular bonds with ease, and if it strikes in just the right way, can separate electrons from their atoms, allowing the blade to disrupt the atomic cohesion required in atomically-bonded armour. It's not a guarantee that a strike will cut through (game terms- it bypasses armour on a critical hit), but it can do tremendous damage regardless. In an ironic twist, vibroblades are one of the most dangerous weapons in the setting, but they are the hardest to deploy since you have to close to melee range with the target. This is difficult to do under normal circumstances, where the target is unloading on you with ranged weapons, but powerful or fast enough units- Ahrugan or Garoudan warriors (strong and tough), Namaran and Kyaren fighters (fast and incredibly agile), and anyone wearing a speed/strength enhancing LPA or battlesuit- can make quite effective use of them. If a Patton closes to melee with an opposing power armour trooper, why take the time to try and blast through the armour when a well-placed stab through the helmet or cockpit viewport can kill the pilot? Granted, it takes a set of huevos the size of Manhattan to close like that, hence why it is usually a back-up tertiary weapon for CQB.

...And yet it would be useless against shields, so there's no reason to try and fit anything of the sort on a torpedo, correct?

It goes through civ-grade shields, but mil-spec ones stop it cold.

AHHHhhh, So, a vibrocollar could be a feasible way for a pirate vessel to lamprey into a cargo hold?

Feasible, but plasma cutters are a lot faster since the harmonic field only extends a few millimeters. It basically disrupts the bonds and the physical blade forces the now-compromised material apart. A plasma cutter, by comparison, uses pure fusion to obliterate atomic bonds in a direct linear path, and can burn through meters of material a second.

Must you go against the grain on everything? Anyways its an all purpose can opener of a knife...

I'm not going against the grain, I'm trying to discern why it's effective whereas other penetrating weapons are not. I am glad it was explained to me.

Because it doesn't address how. :( Until it was explained that the thing was sharp enough to break the bonds between atoms, I was at a loss as to how melee combat was any more effective than ballistic weapons since they both rely upon application of kinetic energy.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is a good example of the gap in tech advancement and "cool factor" between the civilian and military/upper-end mercenary hardware in Dark Nova :D

Its a PPC 40 from Breandans stock of NAU weapons for the Dark Nova'verse [link] Its a Particle Projection Cannon normally crew served but with the power augmentation of the powered armor, you can pretty much one hand it.
